Three Blondes and A Massage…

Ha!  So you thought this was going to be a dirty blonde joke…(Sorry Shane…)

So in my spare time (at 2 a.m.) – I write a monthly column on travel for the Greater Tulsa Reporter Newspaper. And as you all know – I have LOTS of travel stories (disasters) to share. However, this is one of the non-disaster stories – a nice 24 hour getaway with two of my closest friends…hope you enjoy!

Canebrake is a Welcome Break from Business
By MARNIE FERNANDEZ

RELAXING MOMS: From left are Shannon Wilburn, Marnie Fernandez and Liz Hunt during their recent visit to The Canebrake.

——————————————————————————–

Yes, I know this is supposed to be about family travel. But let’s face it; every once in a while, we need a break from the little darlings. My theory is that I’m a much better parent if I have some me time thrown in the mix.

And since taking a week to travel to the Bahamas with my girlfriends is not in the cards anytime soon, I’ve found a great compromise that is only 40 minutes from Tulsa and a fraction of the price.

Two of my dear girlfriends Shannon Wilburn and Liz Hunt decided that we needed to get away, if only for 24 hours. The Canebrake in Wagoner, Okla. was just what we needed, a relaxing retreat that did not involve diapers, homework or cooking meals.

For those of you who have never been, the Canebrake is a phenomenal asset for our state. Situated on a beautiful family-owned ranch, the Canebrake is an eco-friendly resort right in our own backyard. This amazing resort is the vision of the Bracken family whose wish is to preserve their family property while providing a respite for local, regional and national groups, as well as the individual.
And what a respite it was.

We arrived just in time for the Canebrake’s amazing Sunday Brunch, which is worth the drive in and of itself. Sam Bracken is not only the owner of the Canebrake, but also the chef. It is a cozy and welcoming restaurant that focuses on wholesome dishes influenced by flavors around the globe. Chef Bracken focuses on naturally grown cuisine and locally sourced produce.

The brunch had several stations to choose from which included the best eggs Benedict I have ever put in my mouth and too many delicious homemade desserts to count. We were stuffed and pleasantly surprised at the bill, it was only $21 per person.

Then we went to check into our rooms. There are no cars allowed past the main building, so the staff drove us via golf cart to our cottage in the wilderness. It was a beautifully decorated suite with two beds, kitchenette with seating area and a fireplace. Everything was eco-friendly, clean and welcoming.

And then it was spa time. The day just kept getting better. Shannon and I both had amazing massages, which left us both like jelly, and Liz had a facial and scalp massage. I wish we could have stayed longer, because they have an entire spa menu with several different services from which to choose.

Did I mention they also have a yoga barn? Talk about the ultimate in renewing your mind, body and spirit. And classes are free to anyone who is staying at the resort. I was lucky enough to catch the Power Yoga class. It was the best yoga session I have ever taken.

They offer several classes everyday. Even if you don’t stay there, you can pay by the class. Again, almost worth the drive just to do the yoga.

By that time, we were so relaxed, we ended up staying inside our room for the rest of the night, talking, laughing and drinking champagne alongside a cozy fire. It was like a grown up slumber party and just what the doctor ordered for these three weary moms on the go.

The next morning, we lounged around in our pajamas and dined on the continental breakfast they delivered to our rooms. I decided to take advantage of not having a baby on my hip and went for a hike.

The Canebrake has several hiking and walking trails throughout their property. They also have ponds for fishing and it also a popular place for bird watching. The scenery was beautiful and the trails were well marked.

All too soon, our 24-hour escape was over and we headed back to reality. But we will definitely be back.  And maybe have some juicer stories to tell…(but we have to get rid of the preacher’s wife first. 🙂  (Just kidding Shannon…love ya!)

Baby J Vs. Man Vs. Food

Preface: I am actually writing this from a shoot for GOOD MORNING AMERICA at 4 a.m. Yep, people, that is just how I roll.

Actually, it really isn’t at all – I have nothing to do with the shoot other than I am supporting my good friend Shannon Wilburn and her company “Just Between Friends” who are being featured on FREAKING GOOD MORNING AMERICA this morning in Dallas! I am rooming with her at Tory Johnson’s “Spark and Hustle” conference so thought it would be pretty cool to go with her to the shoot. (It was a pretty good idea until the alarms went off at 3:30. That would be AM).

This would be me after being jarred awake by five alarms at 3:30 A freaking M.

Okay – and I am totally digressing from the subject of my blog. Which is my own big news.

I GOT TO MEET ADAM FROM MAN VS. FOOD. And for those of you who do not know – this is a nationally syndicated show on the Travel Channel. (And he has quite a following – and in Tulsa – you would have thought there was an Elvis sighting…people were freaking out). Not only did I get to meet him, but was also interviewed to be on an episode! HIGHLIGHT of my career – seriously. http://www.travelchannel.com/TV_Shows/Man_V_Food

So, for those of you that follow my FB page – know that i”m obsessed with a restaurant in downtown Tulsa called Elote. It is just the best place ever. And so are their owners Libby and Jeremy. I love them so much I starting working for them for burritos and margaritas (and of course wine). http://elotetulsa.com/

They’ve got an amazing thing going with their place – locally owned, organic and locally grown food, puffy tacos and LUCHADOR wrestling. I’m tellin ya people, – it is worth the trip. apparently so did Adam and the crew of Man Vs. Food. They filmed an episode on Wednesday. We were on top-secret mode until the day of the shoot.

So I didn’t tell anyone but Baby J.

She was pretty excited.

When I told my other three that we were going to dinner at Elote to watch them film an episode – they had mixed reactions.

“But can I still get a Sprite?”
“Yeah! Man Vs. Wild Mom! Will we get to “survive”? No honey, this is Man Vs. Food. “What? Who is that?” Nevermind – go back to eating your bugs.
“Umm…will I get to miss school?”

Clearly, my kids weren’t quite a starstruck as I was. NIcholas quickly lost interest in the filming and went open doors for people…I think he has found his calling as a door man.

But it was a sight to behold. ANd Baby J loved her brush with fame.

Actually, she loved the refried beans much more.

Baby J ate all of Liz's lunch. Thinking she could give Adam a run for his money.

But Adam was SMITTEN with sweet Baby J. I am pretty sure that is the only reason he wanted to interview me was to get to my Baby.

My friend Liz, Adam from Man Vs. Food, Me and Baby J covered in beans.

And she could have cared less.

Especially after all day with no nap. Bless her heart – I dragged her all over town doing promotional interviews for Elote – she even helped me do a live interview on the Edge earlier that day. On my hip. WIth a Luchador next to us. Just an everyday occurence for a one-year old.

Live from the EDGE...

So, alas – after 12 hours baby J had enough. And she made sure to let everyone know it.

So after all that – we actually missed the puffy taco throwdown…but we’ll catch it when the episode airs this summer. I’ll just have to trick my hubby and my son that we are really going to watch Man Vs. Wild. If Bear Grylls ever comes to town – watch out – the Fernandez Family (minus mommy) will be on Stalk Mode.

Culture Clash – Or why you shouldn’t take 8 children to a museum.

Yep. We did it again. After staying put for most of Spring Break – the Fernandez Family (minus daddy – he is the smart one) decided to tempt the travel gods one more time and take the kids on a mini road trip.

But, just taking our four wasn’t quite enough. We somehow felt the need to double the load.

Yes, you read correctly. Eight children under the age of 10. To the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Fernandez Fam plus Four More

Now, to qualify – I did have some help. My sis in law (my brother was on a “playdate” at the NCAA tournament…by the way – how did all the dad’s get out of this outing?) And my parents. (who also, I might add invited the neighbor twins to increase our total to eight – gee thanks, dad).

So down the highway we go. Two SUV’s, three car seats, four boosters, twelve bodies and a partridge in a pear tree.

No sooner than five minutes into the trip we forgot the snacks. Much to our passengers chagrin, we turned around. Ten minutes later we had more complaining from the peanut gallery as to when we were going to be there because “this was taking just WAY too long.” (Well, honey – your other option is to get out and walk). This scare tactic seemed to work.

Apparently, we weren’t the only ones who had this idea. The museum was beyond PACKED. Each adult had a certain number of kiddos to keep up with and we STILL managed to lose a couple. (I used to make fun of the parent’s who had their kids on leashes while at the mall. I now understand the necessity of this invention).

Spotted three - now where are the other five?

Then we found the rowdy ones (that would be my boys) climbing on top of statues of horses and making lewd gestures on the Wooly Mammoth’s scuplture’s private parts. Nice. This is about the time the security guards showed up.

Tristan is fascinated with the Mammoth's anatomy.

Man down!

Kids? What kids? I’ve never seen them before – I’m here by myself.

Anyway. Trying to keep up with eight wild children in a crowded area would try the patience of Mother Teresa. So you can just imagine my state of mind. Valium anyone?

And speaking of anxiety – I did misplace my baby. Who was in a stroller. Yep, probably shouldn’t admit that one in public. After my heart stopped and blood ran cold – I realized she was in the very capable hands of my six year old son and nephew who decided she needed to go spelunking through the cave exhibit.

My nephew with Baby J - after the great spelunking adventure

After a few meltdowns, lost cash, more chastising from security guards and maybe a few damaged exhibits…four weary adults dragged eight hyper children to the car.

And that my friends – is why my children will remain culturally illiterate. Unless I pay someone else to take them.

Marnie’s Mommy Moment – Spring Break Edition

So I learned my lesson that taking four kids on live tv is not such a good idea. So this time I just took my one-year old. She still managed to knock off my microphone. But we did manage to spew out the Fernandez Family Spring Break Staycation plans…cuz this family is staying put. I’m still recovering from our last travel disaster (the TRAIN trip…I’m still not even allowed to say the “T” word in front of Shane…)

Coming soon – a guest blog post from my dear friend Allison – who came to visit – and spending time with our motley crew inspired her to write (I’m tellin’ ya – it’s good therapy). So stay tuned.

In the meantime – Happy Spring Break!

Spring Break 2011 – The Fernandez Family is Staying Home

Yes people, after some epic travel disasters…we are finally giving up. The Fernandez Family is staying put for Spring Break. For those of you new to my blog – just scroll back a few to check out the very many reasons why.

(The Fernandez Four camping on our floor. This will be the only camping we will be doing this Spring Break).

But you know – our Staycation this year will be nothing short of boring. Because Tulsa is rockin’ with more than enough to do – even for the most on the go family (like ours).

And parents, if the bosses won’t let you off – never fear. There are plenty of places that will take the lil’ darlins for the week. And not break the pocketbook either.

Here are a few of the Fernandez Family approved events (yes, my 10 year old went through this list with a fine tooth comb…)

Read it and weep (with joy) my friends – your family will have an amazing break without even leaving the city limits.

And if you really want a staycation and not leave the house – check out this awesome website for fun things to do at home. Due to my severe lack of craftiness and manual dexerity – we will probably omit this part. But they look like a whole lotta fun.

Prank Calls, Undies and other Oddities which are my life.

OMG. I accidentally prank called my hubby’s high school friend. That lives in L.A. At 3 a.m. Yikes – how do you explain that one?

I have insomnia. Big time. And it sucks.

(the reasons for my insomnia…)

So I usually spend the hours between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. watching reruns of Law and Order or going through Facebook on my iPhone. Last night the iPhone won. So I saw a post from one of Shane’s friends from High School (who mind you, I’ve never met). It was about shoes or something like that so I clicked on his page to see what it was all about.

And I really don’t know how it happened…but all of a sudden my phone started dialing his number. At 3 a.m.! And my hubby is sound asleep next to me. I panic and start trying to hit the “end” button as fast as I could and the dang thing kept ringing. Seriously. Then I am trying to get back to my facebook page and I dialed him again! So I’m basically prank calling this dude whom I’ve never met at 3 a.m. And have no idea how I’m going to explain this to my hubby, when this guy calls back and figures out it is me. I mean really, how do you explain that?

Actually, my hubby reading this post will be his explanation, because I haven’t told him yet. Wish me luck people.

And this would also be the week that my neighbor saw me naked. Well, not really naked, but I was in my undies strutting around with Baby J. (first, let me explain that my sweet neighbor comes over and lets out our dogs when we aren’t home…but for some reason he didn’t see my car??) (and secondly, I normally don’t “strut” around my house in my skivvies, but was getting my jeans out of the dryer…promise).

(“Mommy! The neighbor is coming!” My “watchdogs”…and no, I am not going to post a pic of me in my undies…sorry.)

And he is just not a neighbor, he is Jade and Tristan’s GRANDPA. Yes people, the ex in-laws live next door. Does this seem weird to anyone else? Yes, not only do we live on a pecan orchard outside of town (Camp Tough Love as my husband calls it)…the ex in-laws live on the orchard as well. We are just one big happy extended family (Nicholas even frequents their house to beg for cookies). But still, not that I want my “extended family” seeing me in my undies. I don’t even want my hubby to see me in them…but that’s a whole ‘nother post about my insecurity issues…

Yes, Shane bought this property B.M. (before Marnie, not bowel movement). So not only did the ex wife live in this house…but her parents bought the guest house next door. And our house is haunted. And we have a MOTOCROSS track in our backyard. Let me tell you – it has taken me some time to get used to all the dynamics…let alone the fact that our closest grocery store is a Quik Trip.

(Camp Tough Love in the snow…)

So honey, if you are reading this and you get a strange call from your friend (who shall remain nameless because I can’t remember his name)…please know that it was just an accident. Cross My Heart.
