And I’m sure anyone else with a toddler would agree with me. Dining out with Baby J and company – it’s not as fun as it looks, folks.
HOwever, there are some places in town that actually welcome a face like this…
One of our newest restaurants on the Tulsa Dining Scene – is one of them. Mi Cocina. (And guess what? I’ve got a $50 gift card for one of you lucky ducks. So keep reading 🙂 ).
I was SO excited when I heard they were coming to T-town. Having lived in Fort Worth for eight years – Mi Cocina and their Mambo Taxi’s were a staple of my pre-kids diet. (For those of you who have not had the privilege of having this delicious frozen concoction of homemade sangria and margarita goodness swirled together – well, people, you are just missing out).
Anyway – I digress.
They opened late last year on Cherry Street – and they’ve been packed ever since.
Mi Cocina started 21 years ago as a tiny restaurant in Dallas. Their focus was simple Tex-Mex with high quality ingredients. And it obviously worked. They now have several restaurants in Texas – and Tulsa is their first restaurant outside of the Lone Star State (yeah us!).
So I decided to brave the Baby J factor and take the family there for dinner. It had been way too long since Mama had a Mambo Taxi.
First of all – the restaurant itself is totally hip. My architect husband is not impressed by much – and he loved what they had done to the build out. It exudes coziness and warmth, while at the same time being modern and chic. And I was also shocked to see how family friendly it was (thank goodness). It is nice to see family friendly restaurants that don’t involve a play-yard or involve the words “Chucky” in their title.
Completely uncharacteristic of her dining out manners, Baby J was very well-behaved (must have been the Mambo Taxi I slipped in her sippy cup….). The service was amazing – and they were super friendly – especially to the kiddos, even though we left a mess. Sorry guys.
The food is very simple – and quite tasty. I had the Rico Salad – which is one of their best sellers. Fresh veggies, juicy fajita chicken all chopped up and served with your choice of any of their yummy homemade dressings. My hubby had the fish tacos that were also pretty darn good. Nachos for the kids (I may have eaten a few too…) and homemade pecan prailines (SINFUL) for dessert. Our tummies were full – and the prices were very reasonable for families.
(Confession: I did have to go back WITHOUT the kiddos and introduce my girlfriends to this wonderful place. Several Mambo Taxis later….well, that’s a whole other blog post. :).
So back to my giveaway. Just leave a comment on my blog – and I’ll draw a winner on Friday, Jan 20 for a $50 gift card to Mi Cocina! Perfect for a family (or girls) night out!
Mmmm…. Mambo Taxi sounds great. I’m in!!
Yes, Mambo Taxi is really sounding good right now. Thanks AMber! Got your name in the drawing!
Always love that place! So happy it is here in Tulsa to enjoy (with or without kids) 🙂
I must say if I had a choice – it would be happy hour with the girls. 🙂 BUT – it was a great place for the family too. 🙂
I tried Mi Cocina a couple weeks ago and would never have thought to try it with my 2 year old. I may never attempt that, but I’d love to go again! (Pick me for the gift card!!) 🙂
Ha! Yes, I would rather go with a group of girls – HOWEVER, it is one of the few upscale eateries that is family -friendly! Thanks for reading and I’ve got your name in the hopper!
Great piece, Marnie. You are right. Mi Cocina’s is the best Tex-Mex restaurant. Glad to see they have come up your way. We love them in Fort Worth. Mico, the founder, is/was a restaurant genius. Thanks for sharing. — Dave Lieber
I love me some Mi Cocina – It was a place I had to visit every time i was in Dallas – so glad they put on just 1/2 a mile from me!
I know Daisi – I LOVE that place. 🙂 Thanks for reading and I’ve got your name in the hopper!
Fortunately my kids have (mostly) outgrown cranky toddler behavior. Still I think I want to keep this one for date night. ; ) Love your stuff, Marnie.
Thanks Ellie – and yes, if I won the gift card – I would definitely use it on a date night. And spend my $ on Katie to babysit. 🙂
I’ve heard so much about this mambo taxis. I must try one!! A gift card would be just what I need to do this. With the $50 I save, I can pay for a babysitter!
Hi Rhonda! Thanks for reading – I’ve got your name in the hopper…you can take Audra out for drinks if you win!
$50 in Mambo Taxis is more than my limit of two drinks. So— I would need to take a girlfriend! Great article Marnie!
Missy – if you win – you have to take all us girls out for MT’s…
Okay..I think that they have been open since September or October maybe and I have been 4 times and live in Broken Arrow. WELL worth the drive! Being a Texan (first 20 years of my life) and having experienced Mi Cocina by the ice rink at the Galleria in Dallas for many many years…I was so thrilled, now that I’m an Okie (last 21 years) that Tulsa was “Mi Cocina Worthy”! Yes, Marnie…yeah us!
Yes, Shannon – and you need to try the Mambo Taxi. 🙂 Love you.
So my waiter at a Mi Cocina in Dallas told me the Mambo Taxi received its name because you will need a taxi to take you home. I loved that place pre-children in my Dallas days, but haven’t been to the Tulsa one yet. And we’re getting a Chuy’s too. Yay, Tulsa!
Ha! Ginger – I didn’t know that – but it makes perfect sense. 😉 I definitely needed a taxi after two…
Totally love Mi Cocina. Has always be on the “must” list when we visit Big D. Now with La Madeleine coming I will never have to leave T-town again!
I know – we are getting some great Dallas restaurants – yeah! THanks for reading Belinda…
LOVE Mi Cocina!
Me too Ashley! Thanks for reading!
Those Mambo Taxi’s look beautiful!!
Jeannie – they ARE beautiful – inside and out. 🙂
We love it too but the white leather chairs scared me with kids at first, however, the wait staff made it clear that kids are welcome!! My personal fab- street tacos!!
Street Tacos are YUMMY. ANd I can’t believe you couldn’t finish ONE Mambo Taxi. Girl – we are going to have to practice. 🙂
I’m beginning to have a new-found appreciation for restaurants that have chips, bread, etc. to tide the kiddo over before the food arrives. Food to know there’s a drink to do that for Mama too! Thanks for the tip! 🙂
Hey Kenna! I know – isn’t it funny what we now look for in places when we go out to eat…:)
We love MC! Bridger calls the nachos “nachitos!” And according to him, the one in downtown FW is the “real” MC. As opposed to the “fake” one on Hulen I guess. 🙂
Hey Mindia! Mambo Taxi’s always remind me of the zoo girls. 🙂 Miss you!
Tried it and loved it…believe it or not, I already did take the kids and I can confirm that they were very accomodating. We would love to go again…and I definitely need to try that drink.
Chris – you of all people – I can’t believe you haven’t had that drink. It is is right up your alley!
Love the mambo taxi!
Yum! I went once with friends, and can’t wait to take my husband next time!
I am cracking up that half of my comments on this post are from Boston Avenue girls! 🙂 Who love Mambo Taxi’s apparently…:) Thanks Jill for reading!
Hey, Marnie! Loved the post…I’m so glad Tulsa is getting some good Dallas restaurants! Can’t wait for the Mambo Taxi! See you soon, sweetie!
Wendy
Thanks Wendy! If you win – you have to take me out for a drink. 🙂
Hey! I remember this place, I was just thinking of it the other nite and couldn’t remember the name. I know i am not local, but my brother is and this would be a great date night for him and the wife! Yummy food!
Hey Dette! I am sure we have drank Mambo Taxi’s together at some point in our zoo career. 🙂 Thanks for reading and I’ve got your name in the drawing! 🙂 XOXO
I’ve been wanting to go but haven’t had a chance. I’m from Dallas and need a mambo taxi!
Hi Rachel! Yes, you need to go soon! THe Mambo Taxi’s are just as good as I remember…thanks for reading!
We need a mambo taxi afternoon some “kid free” weekend my dear!
Yes, Nan – we do. Name the time. 🙂
Keep taking baby j…you know the more you dine out with the babe the better she gets!!
